Living in a new place is different from visiting it. It’s unlikely you will change when you travel. But when you move, your new environment becomes part of how you see the world—and how you see yourself.
On this page you’ll learn how your time away from home can also be a time for growth, achievement, and exploration, not just of other lands and people, but also of yourself.
Preparing a move can be daunting. Suddenly, you have a million things to do. It’s easy to become overwhelmed with checklists, goodbyes and last minute changes.
But this can also be a time of progress and accomplishment. With the right outlook, you can build confidence in your ability to organise and manage projects. You can identify and prioritise your urgent tasks and discover what you need for this part of your move.
You also get to decide what you will create for yourself in your new environment.
This is difficult to do alone. So many people get caught up in tasks and lose sight of opportunities. When we work together, we’ll find out what you need most as you prepare for your journey, and we’ll outfit you with the tools and resources you’ll need to create the life your want once you arrive.
Once you reach your new home, it may seem like everything is a struggle and the assistance you need is nowhere to be found. When we work together, we’ll sort out what must be done first. For instance, here are some questions to consider.
- What can you do now?
- What are your priorities?
- What do you want to set in motion or have around you?
- What is important in your life now?
We’ll get things done and look at ways to enjoy all the new people and places around you.
Balancing work and family can be difficult anywhere—and perhaps more so in a new country. It’s easy to fall behind and the tendency when this happens is to work even harder. But this can be unhealthy. Sometimes, it leads to time away from your family when they need you most.
In situations like this, we can structure your time so your career is on track. You will learn to delegate and set limits based on your values. Soon you’ll feel in control and be able to enjoy your career and family.
When you feel uncomfortable or discouraged things can seem worse than they are. And when you are feeling strong in yourself it is easier to see and accept people and cultures as they truly are. We’ll focus on how you can feel comfortable and confident in your environment. There are many possibilities. Learning languages, for instance, is a fun and effective way to interact with the people who speak it.
If you want to step deeper into your new environment, we’ll discover opportunities for you to become involved in the community—whether you use existing skills or go in a new direction.
From time to time, partners who move to a new country experience changes in their relationship. If you are struggling with changes in your relationship we will work together to decide what you need. Is it awareness? Communication? Or do you need to clarify what is best for your own growth? Whatever you need, we will find the necessary steps to move you forward.
While you are in your host country, inviting friends and family from your home lets them share in your experience. When you keep in touch with friends and family it is easier to adjust to your home country when you return. Perhaps you are already back home and feel lonely or out of place. I can help you adapt the valuable skills you learned abroad to your situation now.
There are many stages to go through when you make a move. As you can see, it is possible to take responsibility for your experience no matter what you face. My aim is to empower you with tools and approaches that help you grow and enjoy your new surroundings.
